My name is Avi Aulakh, and I'm the psychiatrist at Savera Medical & Psychology. Primarily, I focus on treating opioid, alcohol, and other substance abuse disorders, along with providing psychiatric evaluations for non-substance-related addictions and comorbidities.
I completed my medical training at St Petersburg States Medical Academy in Russia, earning a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2000. Despite my passion for medicine, I was driven toward furthering my career in mental health and addictions. After volunteering at the Alberta Hospital and spending some time in psychiatry, I knew establishing myself in psychiatric medicine was the only path forward.
In 2014, I completed my psychiatry residency at the University of Alberta and was made a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2014. In 2015, I also completed a Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry. Presently, I am a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine and a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Addiction Medicine.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to gain leadership experience in many different psychiatric and addiction capacities throughout Canada including the Opiod Dependency Program, Addiction Services, Alberta Health Services (North Zone), iRecover Centre and Her Recovery Treatment Centre. I am also the founder of Savera Medical Centre and the co-founder of Savera Medical & Psychology. Additionally, I am the founder and President of the National Advocacy of Substance Abuse and Harm Reduction in Adults and Adolescents (NASHAA).
My initial calling to medicine was inspired by a desire to help and create meaningful change in the lives of others.
Through life experience, I began to appreciate the complex interplay of biological, psychological and sociological factors on human health. Psychiatry became an intuitive next step for me.
While I fell in love with psychiatry as a whole, addiction recovery is my specialty. Treating addiction is indescribably rewarding and multi-pronged. Firstly, successful treatment of addiction grants clear and tangible results that can be seen and felt throughout many spheres of a person's life. Secondly, helping an individual with addiction grants me the privilege of helping their entire family and community all at once. The rewards of such are immeasurable.
